Meeting New and Old Friends in Florida

(March 18, 2024) — Georgetown School of Nursing alumna Robin Jeffery (N’78) and her husband, Reuben, welcomed Dean Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, and Luci Baines Johnson (H’18) for a gathering with dozens of nursing alumni on March 7 in the Jefferys’ Palm Beach, Florida, home.

Johnson, one of two daughters of President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, studied at the School of Nursing in the 1960s and received an honorary degree from Georgetown in 2018. She and her husband, Ian Turpin, created the Johnson/Turpin Fellows Endowed Fund in June 2020 — established through a $1 million gift to Georgetown. It supports scholarships for graduate students who have a demonstrated interest in serving adult and geriatric populations, along with other underserved communities.

During the alumni gathering, Johnson and Waite engaged the attendees in a discussion about the ongoing nationwide nursing shortage, how Georgetown is contributing to building the workforce, and a unique aspect of the Georgetown education, cura personalis, which instills caring for the whole person.
