Georgetown Nursing Faculty’s Board Review Book Helps Students Prepare for National Certification

(September 18, 2026) — A board review book developed by faculty from Georgetown University’s Berkley School of Nursing is helping students and graduate nurse-midwives and women’s health nurse practitioners prepare for national certification examinations, bringing the expertise of Georgetown educators to students and graduates across the country.

“Georgetown Midwifery & WHNP Board Review” prepares learners for certification examinations administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) and National Certification Corporation (NCC). The book features content review, rationales and references designed to support test-taking practice and includes more than 700 multiple-choice questions developed and reviewed by Georgetown faculty, clinicians and alumni.

The resource draws on the experience of faculty in Georgetown’s Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner programs, which prepare advanced practice nurses to provide primary, sexual and reproductive healthcare.

“This is us putting all our efforts forward to help grow and diversify the midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner workforce because we believe that midwives and women’s health nurse practitioners can make a big difference in addressing the U.S. perinatal health care crisis,” said Heather Bradford, PhD, CNM, FACNM, lead editor of the book and assistant program director of Georgetown’s Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner programs.

Bradford, the Mary L. and Raymond T. Holden Endowed Professor in Maternal and Infant Health, co-edited the book with Georgetown nursing faculty members Katie Atkin, DNP, WHNP-BC, ANP-BC, and Melicia Escobar, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, FACNM. Georgetown faculty and alumni contributed to writing and reviewing the questions included in the book.

Drawing on Georgetown’s Experience

Georgetown’s faculty and programs have a strong record of preparing graduates for national certification. The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program reports a 2025 first-time certification examination pass rate of 95%, compared with a national average of 80%. Georgetown’s midwifery program reports a 2025 84% first-time pass rate on the AMCB certification examination, compared with a national average of 74%.

The book translates that experience into a resource that can support nurse-midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner students and graduates wherever they complete their education.

Grounded in Georgetown’s commitment to cura personalis, or care for the whole person, the book also takes a broader approach to exam preparation. In addition to practice questions and content review, it includes guidance on study skills, time management, self-reflection and developing an individualized study plan.

“This is such a gift to the profession,” said Berkley School of Nursing Dean Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FADLN, FAAN. “This important resource not only supports students and graduates preparing for national certification exams, but also reflects the excellence and commitment of our Georgetown nursing community.”

The project received support from Georgetown’s Office of Technology Commercialization, which worked with the faculty to bring the book to market. Bradford, Escobar and Atkin were recognized with Georgetown’s 2026 Commercialization Award for developing the comprehensive test-preparation resource.

All proceeds from the book support the Georgetown Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program Student Emergency Fund. The fund assists students facing unexpected expenses while completing their education.
