Dr. Vera Barton-Maxwell is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the nationally ranked Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at the Berkley School of Nursing at Georgetown University. She brings over 30 years of cardiovascular nursing experience to her academic and clinical roles and maintains a part-time practice as a primary care nurse practitioner at Wheeling Health Right, serving underserved populations in West Virginia.
Prior to joining Georgetown, Dr. Barton-Maxwell held faculty appointments at Duquesne University and Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU), teaching in both graduate and undergraduate nursing programs. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from WJU and completed her PhD in Nursing at West Virginia University (WVU).
Dr. Barton-Maxwell is a past president of the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN) and a nationally recognized expert in chronic heart failure management. Her honors include the AANP State Award for Excellence for her advancement of evidence-based heart failure care, the Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Nursing Education Award, the St. Ignatius of Loyola Outstanding Alumnus Award from WJU, the PhD Nursing Leadership Award, and the Anna Mary Miller Scholarship from WVU.
Her research focuses on decision-making among heart failure patients considering implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. She is a published author and peer reviewer for several professional journals, and a national speaker on cardiac care and advanced nursing practice. Her current scholarly interests include experiential learning and health equity, with a focus on preparing nurse practitioner students to provide culturally responsive, community-engaged care.
