Dr. Scott-Herring graduated from the University of Maryland DNP program in Baltimore, MD. Her focus encompassed preceptor policy, education, and preparation such as “A CRNA Preceptor Workshop to Increase Preceptor Satisfaction, Confidence and Comfort: A Quality Improvement Project” (Scott-Herring, M, Singh, S.). In addition, Dr. Scott-Herring’s DNP project, “Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Preceptorship-Mentorship Program” (Scott-Herring, M, Singh, S.) has been widely utilized to bridge the gap to practice for CRNAs new to practice.
Dr. Scott-Herring also holds a Master’s Degree in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD; a BSN from Loyola University, New Orleans, LA; an RN Diploma from St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, PA; and a BS in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. Most recently, she completed a Master’s Degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Baltimore, MD.
For anesthesia practice, Dr. Scott-Herring served as the Clinical Coordinator of Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Education at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, where she administered primarily pediatric anesthesia to children ages day of life and up. Also, she managed the clinical experience of SRNAs from seven nurse anesthesia programs. Dr. Scott-Herring then had the opportunity to work as the CRNA Manager of Clinical Education and Professional Development at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the world-renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. In addition to providing anesthesia care, she has spearheaded recruiting, orientation, onboarding, simulation experience, and many quality improvement projects. She maintains her clinical practice in large academic medical centers and smaller community hospitals today.
One of only two CRNAs to date, Dr. Scott-Herring completed a fellowship at The Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, Baltimore MD with a focus on simulation and pediatric airway management, “A Pediatric Airway Rotator Performance Improvement Initiative” (Scott-Herring, M., Mendez, A., Shay, J., McCloskey, J., & Koka, R.). Since that time, she has become a certified simulation instructor through the Center for Medical Simulation at Harvard and MIT Universities.
Dr. Scott-Herring is active in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) and the Maryland Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA). Nationally, she has served on the AANA State Organization Development Committee (SODC) and the Nominating Committee. At the state level, she has served on the MANA board in a variety of positions for the last 15 years.
Her current interests include simulation, pediatrics, patient safety, preceptor/mentor educational development, bridging the gap in CRNA practice, active shooter events, policy, and medical cannabis.
