Dr. Katie Atkin is a board certified Women’s Health and Adult Nurse Practitioner and an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University's Berkley School of Nursing teaching in the Nurse-Midwifery/Women's Health NP (WHNP) & WHNP programs. With over two decades of experience in clinical practice and education, Katie has dedicated her career to improving health outcomes by providing evidence-based perinatal, sexual and reproductive health care to people across the lifespan.
Katie has practiced at Beth Israel Deaconess (BID) Plymouth Ob/GYN and Midwifery in the outpatient setting since 2010, where she has precepted many WHNP, FNP and midwifery students. Her areas of clinical expertise include complex contraceptive management, abnormal pap smear management, abnormal uterine bleeding and caring for individuals navigating the menopausal transition. Katie also serves as the co-director of the OB Patient Safety Program at BID Plymouth Hospital, where she designs and leads interdisciplinary in situ simulations to enhance patient safety, team performance and clinical outcomes.
Prior to her appointment at Georgetown University School of Nursing, Katie was full time faculty at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP) in Boston, MA where she was an Assistant Professor and the coordinator of the Women’s Health/Gender-related and Dual Adult-Gerontology/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner specialties. She served on and was chair of the Admissions committee for the School of Nursing and served on the steering committee of the MGHIHP Center for Climate Change, Climate Justice, and Health. Katie is interested in exploring the intersection of environmental health and its disproportionate impact on women and pregnant people and how it is expanding the existing gap in disparate maternal and infant health outcomes across racial groups in the United States. She is dedicated to advancing health equity by translating research into practice and promoting policies that support safe and equitable care. Katie develops innovative teaching approaches that prepare students to apply evidence-based practices and advocate for equitable, patient-centered perinatal, sexual and reproductive health care.
Katie is a graduate of Georgetown University (BSN), New York University (MS) and MGH Institute of Health Professions (DNP).
