(August 1, 2025) — The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) has selected the Berkley School of Nursing’s Mara Evans, DNP, CNM, assistant professor of nursing and a dedicated global health clinician, for induction into its class of 2025 fellows.

According to the ACNM, being selected as a fellow is “an honor bestowed upon those midwives whose demonstrated leadership within ACNM, clinical excellence, outstanding scholarship and professional achievement have merited special recognition both within and outside of the midwifery profession.”

“I’m honored to join ACNM’s visionary fellows — may every midwife rise as we lift our profession together,” said Evans.

Evans’ contributions to Georgetown in both its Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NM/WHNP) Program and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) Program are informed by her global health work and dedicated commitment to advancement of health care education and respectful care.

“Dr. Evans is truly deserving of this honor,” said Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FADLN, FAAN. “She has been a steadfast advocate for her patients and for advancing the role of nurse midwives in improving the health of birthing people globally. I’m delighted to be among the first to congratulate her on this significant achievement.”

Evans will be inducted Oct. 11 at the ACNM Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, California.

Evans completed her midwifery degree at Yale University and earned a doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University. Over the course of her career, she has gained extensive experience in diverse settings across various regions of the country. During her missions with Doctors Without Borders in South Sudan, she dedicated herself to advancing the capabilities of national midwives through a combination of didactic lectures, hands-on simulation and bedside teaching. Additionally, she directed her efforts towards providing care for individuals displaced by conflict, addressing the health care needs of vulnerable populations with limited access to medical services, and offering support to those impacted by Female Genital Cutting.

Evans has actively contributed to the education of midwifery and medical students, serving as a clinical preceptor at Evanston Hospital and the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. In her capacity as an associate professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, she furthered her commitment to education by serving as clinical faculty for family medicine and obstetric residents.

To better serve the needs of pregnant people and their communities, Evans is dedicated to expanding access to midwifery through the consideration of barriers to care and the education of the next generation of midwives. Notably, she played a pivotal role in establishing the inaugural midwifery practice at SSM Health in Madison, Wisconsin.

Her professional passions center around innovative midwifery education and global humanitarian work.
