Well-Known Ethicist and Educator to Be Inducted as Fellow of American Academy of Nursing
September 27, 2019 – Dr. Carol Taylor, a highly regarded ethicist, will be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in October.
A professor of advanced nursing practice at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, Taylor is a beloved educator who earned her PhD in philosophy at Georgetown and is well known for her longstanding co-edited textbook, Fundamentals of Nursing: The Art and Science of Person-Centered Care, now in its ninth edition. “I’ve never desired to be a ‘mover and shaker,’ but I’ve been incredibly blessed in many ways to work with great colleagues in the ethics community,” says Taylor. “Georgetown University opened doors to me, and a lifetime of teaching and practicing both clinical and organization ethics in the U.S. and abroad is now yielding mature fruit.”
‘Amazing Accomplishments’
Dr. Carole Roan Gresenz, the school’s interim dean, praised Taylor for her work.
“Dr. Taylor is highly regarded on and off Georgetown’s campus as a reflective and knowledgeable ethicist and educator,” says Gresenz. “Her fellowship in the academy honors her many contributions, and we celebrate her achievement and are grateful to call her a colleague.”

“I am proud to welcome this incredible class of leaders to the American Academy of Nursing,” she says. “Their amazing accomplishments have changed health and health care across the country and around the globe. I look forward to celebrating the new fellows at our 2019 policy conference and working with them in the future so that our collective knowledge can impact and influence health policy.”
A Passion for Ethics
Taylor says she looks forward to continue working with her academy colleagues and teaching students about ethics.
“I have utmost respect for my nurse colleagues in the academy and throughout my career have worked with many nurse ethicists now in the academy’s bioethics expert panel,” she says. “It will be an honor to join them and one I humbly accept. Preparing the next generation of health care professionals and leaders to recognize and respond to contemporary ethical challenges remains my passion.”
Taylor joins several other Georgetown faculty who are already fellows, including Dr. Mary C. Brucker, Dr. Ladan Eshkevari, Dr. Patricia Grady, Dr. Amanda Liddle, Dr. Erin Maughan, Dr. Suzanne Miyamoto, Professor Joan Riley, Dr. Margaret C. Slota, Dr. Mary Wakefield, and Dr. Edilma L.
