Georgetown University’s Distance-Based, Online MS in Nursing Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program

The Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NM/WHNP) Program at Georgetown University’s School of Nursing specifically teaches advanced practice registered nurses how to provide primary care to individuals across the lifespan: reproductive health care during the pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum periods; sexual and gynecologic health care; family planning; preconception care; and care of newborns up to 1 month old.

Grounded in the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, the program emphasizes safe, comprehensive, culturally responsive health care to transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) people, and to people of all sexual orientations. In line with the mission and values of Georgetown, this midwifery program seeks to advance health equity, mitigate racism and biases, and provide structurally competent care through trauma informed, person-centered approaches.

Program Curriculum: Distance-Based, Online Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

The dual Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (NM/WHNP) curriculum is grounded in the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, or care for the whole person. 

Students in the program will cultivate a holistic view of individual and family health that encompasses physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health as they prepare to pursue a career as a nurse-midwife and women’s health nurse practitioner.

The NM/WHNP Program is offered on a part-time basis, and consists of:

• 49 credits
• 27 months to complete
• 1,000+ clinical hours
• Two required Objective Clinical Intensives

In the NM/WHNP Program, students will:

• Develop advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through live, distance-based, online classes with interactive content and unfolding case studies.
• Attend 2 in-person and 2 virtual Objective Clinical Intensives (OCIs) to develop specialized clinical skills through low- and high-fidelity simulation in gynecologic, birth/obstretric emergency, postpartum, and newborn care; reflect on and practice person-centered communication skills that promote health equity; interview and assess standardized patients; and engage in experiential learning with genitourinary teaching associates. OCIs are a welcoming setting where students can forge strong connections with peers, program faculty, and the Georgetown campus.
• Learn trauma-informed, person-centered care.
• Engage in a curriculum that aims to advance health equity, mitigate biases and racism, and provide structurally competent care.
• Gain clinical experience supported by expert preceptors, clinical faculty advisors, and course faculty.

Admissions: Distance-Based, Online Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

To apply to the master’s-level Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Georgetown University School of Nursing, you need to: 

• Be a US citizenship or permanent US residence
• Hold a current US registered nurse (RN) license
• Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) entry-level Master of Science in Nursing degree from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
• Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 science GPA
• Have successfully completed (C or better) a college-level, three-credit course in statistics within the past five years

• Three letters of recommendation
