Georgetown University’s Distance-Based, Online MS in Nursing Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program

Throughout the program, students develop specialized skills and experience to treat and prevent illnesses as well as provide focused care in various areas, such as primary care, prenatal and postpartum care, reproductive health care, general wellness and preventive care, and care throughout the lifespan from adolescents to menopause. The WHNP online program at Georgetown University School of Nursing offers an innovative and robust health equity curriculum scaffolded throughout the specialty courses. Students learn trauma-informed, person-centered care that seeks to advance health equity, mitigate racism and biases, and provide structurally competent care.

Program Curriculum: Distance-Based, Online Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program

The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) curriculum is grounded in the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, or care for the whole person.

The Georgetown University WHNP Program is offered on a part-time basis, and the curriculum consists of:

• 44 credits
• 23 months to complete
• 784 clinical hours
• 2 required Objective Clinical Intensives

In the WHNP Program, students will:

• Develop advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills during live, distance-based, online classes, informed by interactive content and unfolding case studies.
• Develop specialized skills, such as the ability to perform pelvic exams and gynecologic procedures, through high-fidelity simulation.
• Attend 2 in-person and 1 virtual Objective Clinical Intensives (OCIs) to develop specialized clinical skills through low- and high-fidelity gynecologic and postpartum simulation; reflect on and practice person-centered communication skills that promote health equity; interview and assess standardized patients; and engage in experiential learning with genitourinary teaching associates. OCIs are a welcoming setting where students can forge strong connections with peers, program faculty, and the Georgetown campus.

Admissions: Distance-Based, Online Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program

To apply for admission to the master’s-level Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) Program, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
• Hold a current U.S. registered nurse (RN) license
• Have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) entry-level Master of Science in Nursing degree from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
• Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 science GPA
• Have successfully completed (C or better) a college-level, three-credit course in statistics within the past five years

In addition to these, your application must include:

• Professional resume or curriculum vitae
• Sealed official academic transcripts
• One- to two-page personal statement
• Live recorded interview
• Three letters of recommendation
• If your native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Types of Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Careers

Upon completing the Master of Science in Nursing (MS in Nursing) Program, graduates are eligible to sit for board certification through the National Certification Corporation (NCC) and the Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner exam. Board-certified WHNPs pursue careers that provide care to individuals across the lifespan in various settings, such as primary care and prenatal clinics, hospitals, and emergency care clinics.

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program Accreditation

The distance-based, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). CCNE accreditation indicates that a nursing program is of high academic quality and offers students the preparation necessary to become capable and ethical care providers.
